Björk To Stage Three Actual Fundraising Concerts in Reykjavík This August

The shows will benefit an Icelandic women’s shelter

This August, Björk is playing three actual concerts in her hometown of Reykjavík to raise awareness about causes important to her.

“i want to invite you to some concerts,” she wrote in a Facebook post in late June. “i want to celebrate that we’ve at least made it through the first stage of the coronavirus epidemic and honour the many icelandic musicians i’ve worked with through the years.”

With Iceland now reopening after the COVID-19 pandemic, the shows will take place with a live audience at Reykjavík’s Harpa Hall on August 9, 15 and 23.

The events will be live-streamed online and raise money and awareness for Kvennaathvarfid – a charity that supports women and immigrants of different origin within Iceland.

The series will feature members of the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra, flute septet Viibra, Hamrahlíð Choir, and special guests to perform arrangements live, without beats or electronics. Each night will have a unique setlist.

Tickets are available for pre-order via Iceland Airwaves on July 2 and go on sale to the general public the following day. Read a message about Björk Orkestral below.

A note from Björk:
dear friends
i would like to invite you to some concerts
to honour
folks who got hit hardest in the coronavirus
and the black lives matter movement
and to honour how many icelandic musicians i have worked with through the years
i recorded almost all of my albums with local musicians :
homogenic with an icelandic string octet
medulla with schola cantorum ( an icelandic mixed choir )
volta with 10 brass girls i found all over the island and then later they formed wonderbrass
biophilia with langholt´s church girl choir graduale nobili
vulnicura with a 15 piece string ensemble
utopia with 12 female fluteplayers who later formed the flute septet viibra
cornucopia with hamrahlíð´s choir conducted by þorgerður ingólfsdóttir
all these albums where then performed all around the planet with these musicians
together they are over hundred people !!
and we are going to celebrate that we are all healthily exiting quarantine together by playing concerts in harpa music hall for 3 weekends of august
my input into the feminist fight is to brag about that almost all of those arrangements are by me
unfortunately this is something that is almost always ignored when women are arrangers
the concerts will be in the afternoons and will also be streamed live online, where there will be an option to donate to the icelandic women’s shelter – which supports women of all origin in iceland
for those attending in person, after the concert we will be offering food to raise money in support of this charity
the concerts will be “unplugged” or acoustic and performed without beats and electronics
the concerts will be performed with the icelandic symphony orchestra and guests
i feel we are going through extraordinary times
horrifying but also an opportunity to truly change
it is demanded of us that we finally confront all racism
that we learn that lives are more important that profit
and look inside us and finecomb out all our hidden prejudices and privileges
let´s all humbly learn together
transform
humongous love
björk

After taking last year off and almost getting replaced by a Vanilla Ice concert, Austin City Limits is returning to Zilker Park in Austin, Texas this fall. ACL will take place over two weekends, 10/1-10/3 and 10/8-10/10, and organizers have just announced the 2021 festival’s lineup. Headlining the shows in October are George Strait, Billie Eilish, Stevie Nicks, Miley Cirus, Rufus Du Sol, Dababy and Erykah Badu.

“Music is coming back strong to the Live Music Capital of the World,” says Austin Mayor Steve Adler. “The return of Austin City Limits as an in-person festival celebrates that our efforts as a community to become vaccinated are working. Health and safety remain our top priority, and we will work closely with the organizers and Austin Public Health to ensure ACL Fest is in line with our health standards. We must continue to get everyone vaccinated and keep up our success.”

As the Austin City Limits music festival prepares for a big comeback after a 2020 COVID-19 cancellation, tickets are on sale for both weekends (October 1-3 and 8-10) now.

The festival’s cancellation, according to a 2019 study, presented a blow to Austin’s economy, as the event brought almost $1.5 billion to the area that year. The cancellation also came months after Austin’s other iconic music festival, South By Southwest, made the decision to cancel for the first time in its 34-year history.
